Default True fta

Hi i,m going to start using my FTA for more than Bev And Charlie . From what i,ve read a 30 inch dish and a linear lnb is required . I live in Nova Scotia Wondering what would be decent satellites to pick up some stations from . Is there any satellites that would give you the same type of programming as say a cable network . Thanks in Advance

hi
to receive true fta you need a motor to turn your dish from sat to sat. there is 62 sats out their with about 500 international channels. i don't know the content but its better than nothing.

Why would you want same as cable? As the other post suggested, I would recommend a motor. Some STBs are better with motors than others. From NS, you can likely see some EU oriented satellites as well as North America oriented satellites out to about 120 degrees. Much further west than that may be difficult.

Go to Lyngsat.com and surf around there and look at the various satellites that you might want to view. Check out the programming available on each. You will be looking for "Ku" selections with that dish arrangement. As an option, you might consider one of the quad polarity LNBs that will allow you to get both linear/low band and circular/high band off the same dish.

Depending upon your location, I'd advise a 36" dish instead of the 30" Winegard. I originally bought a 31" dish, and sometime later upgraded to a 36" for the added signal strength that it offerred. In the central US, Michigan , Ohio, Indiana , etc you are more likely to succeed with the Winegard, that if you are located on the coastal areas. If you expect to do much work with the True FTA linear birds, I'd get the larger dish.

Hi:

I also live in Nova Scotia. You would be better off if you could locate a bigger dish. *choice is slowly getting rid of all their big 'one meter' dishes and upgrading their customers to smaller plastic dishes. Maybe you could find a dealer/installer and get one of their old dishes free/cheap. If you get a motor get one that is 'usuals' capable. I'd hold off on the motor till springtime. It takes a lot of work to get everything level enough so that the motor keeps the dish on the proper arc.

At 123 degrees west you will get G10R which carries ABC, FOX and RTN (retro network). At 97W you will get T5 which carriers over 120 channels. Most of these are foreign language but there are some interesting channels including English broadcasts of 'Russia Today' and 'Al Al Jazeera' which are news stations like CNN or FOX. I would aim at one of those two until you get your motor installed.

You will need either a universal LNB or a -INVACOM LNB (QPH031).

It's a fun hobby. Good hunting.

cheers
Bryce
